Myra Anna Jaquet papers, 1913-1944.

Collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, personal journals, photographs, newsclippings and a piece of silk associated with Myra Anna Jaquet, a Methodist missionary and teacher in China from 1911 to 1942. Correspondence includes two folders of letters concerning primarily the mission school and education, but also church and religious matters, including the advancement of Dr. Liu, the first female graduate of a northern China medical school run by missionaries. The revolution that overthrew the Ch'ing Dynasty is mentioned only briefly. Literary manuscripts include stories written by Jaquet and her students that were included in her letters. Jaquet's personal journals, intended for distribution among friends and relatives in the United States, include detailed descriptions of a school play and her work as a teacher of Chinese girls, as well as photographs of people and places in China. In 1941 Jaquet was interned by the Japanese as a prisoner of war, along with other American and British missionaries, and later repatriated. Jaquet's narrative of these events is housed in the Myra Snow collection (A 186).
